Hosting Project

The hosting project is a member supported nonprofit collective intent upon helping the public gain access to tools that are needed for the dissemination of information. Project DoD is intent upon offering much of the alienated public an alternative option to corporate hosting and its shortfalls. While the Internet has allowed for a breakthrough in the means for sharing and propagating information, the market-driven hosting solution has proven that it's incapable of providing the public reasonable access to such tools. As a result we find that one of the only tools left with the capability of balancing democratic participation in media has become inaccessible to the underprivileged masses. That is, those of us incapable of affording corporate hosting charges or defending our right to free-speech may find ourselves left out of public discussion, action, and consciousness. Our hopes are that we may remedy this problem through a more collectively run and managed structure, which allows a community of users to pool resources and organize access to the capabilities this digital medium offers.

Domain Hosting

Domain hosting is the concept of getting your own domain (i.e. http://www.yourname.com/) and using our server to provide you space and network access to it. For this type of hosting you must purchase a domain from an Internet registrar and point its DNS servers at Project DoD.

Domain Pricing

Domain Hosting:SUGGESTED DONATION OF $60.00 A YEAR

Summary:
- Default 500 Megs of disk space
- Default 25 Gigs of bandwidth a month
- Unlimited e-mail accounts and aliases
- Default webstats

Domain hosting means you already have the domain and are willing to change your primary and secondary DNS servers to:
DARKSIDE.DOD.NET
DEATHSTAR.DOD.NET

Additional Information

Our servers are UNIX and Linux based with the capability of running Server Side Includes, CGI scripts, Secure Socket Layer, Webstats, SSH Access, PHP, and MySQL. If you would like to request that a service be added to dod.net please mail us at admin@dod.net.

You get 500 megs of disk space for your website. You can access this space through FTP (File Transfer Protocol) or SSH (Secure Shell). Our FTP address is FTP.DOD.NET and our SSH host is DARKSIDE.DOD.NET, if you need more information on how to upload files using FTP or access your account through SSH please visit our Support page.

To gain access to your webstats simply type your site's URL into a web browser, followed by the directory webstats/. That is, http://www.yourname.com/webstats/. For a sample of what our webstats look like go to http://www.dod.net/webstats/.

E-mail Accounts and Aliases

We offer unlimited e-mail account and aliases with the domain hosting account. These accounts come free of advertisements and we enable all accounts with junk mail protection, which you can turn off at any time. If you have any technical problems with your e-mail account, simply visit our Support page. If you have any junk mail problems or Spam mail issues with this account you can forward these abusive, unsolicited, or threatening e-mails to abuse@dod.net. We encourage you to use a POP mail client to access your account; however, you can also check your mail through our web interface at: https://secure.dod.net/webmail/.

Virtual Hosting

Virtual hosting (at least that is what we call it) is the idea of getting your name as a lower-level domain extension to dod.net (i.e. http://yourname.dod.net/). This is for those of you who would like to save money on yearly domain registrations. Basically Project DoD's servers provide you a home for your website and access to our services and assistance.

Donations

Project DoD opperates off of donations from users. The $60.00 hosting price above is a suggested donation that we request of all users. Project DoD is a community run and supported 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. This means that without your contribution Project DoD will be unable to function in any capacity. That is, we have bandwidth, hardware, and basic organizational expenses that must be covered. The amount above is a community breakdown of the minimum each user should contribute to pay those expenses. Please, if you feel you can donate more, do so. Your additional contribution may benefit others who are unable to make a contribution of their own; and that is the real purpose of collective organization.

Bandwidth Usage

Many Internet Service Providers make their money off bandwidth charges: Project DoD is different. Since we are nonprofit and everyone who hosts with dod.net is a collective member, we all share from the same bandwidth pool. Each member of DoD.net is allocated 25 Gigs of data transfer a month; however, you will not be charged extra if you go over. We believe any issues regarding excess bandwidth consumption can be discussed and corrected. That is, if your site takes 10Gigs of data transfer a month we will simply look at ways to reduce bandwidth consumption, distribute bandwidth load to other DoD hosting servers, or set up site mirrors. Many of the members of DoD hosting, however, never come close to using their full 25 Gigs. This means that if we have done all we can to reduce your bandwidth consumption there is a good chance you can continue to host with DoD and just mop-up the bandwidth surplus. This is, After all, a collective community built to share such resources.

Additional Web Space

You can get additional web-space in units of 500 megs. So for one additional unit of 500 megs you would donate an additional $10.00 a year. The additional space would be added to your current web-space, which would bring your total to 1000 megs. The cost of the additional space will simply be tacked onto your annual membership fee. For example if you want 2000 more megs you would pay $40.00 more for the year. This would bring your total web space to 2500 megs and your annual membership fee to $100.00.

Terms of Service:

DoD does not host porn or hate sites. Members are not permitted to post illegal sexual content or any content that is targeted at offending any ethnic group, nor are members permitted to spam to or from DoD or any of it's clients. Do not threaten or intimidate anyone using any of DoD's services. DoD reserves the right to suspend or deny any and all services without prior notification or consent of the member. DoD also reserves the right to deny services without any given reason and for any given reason. These measures must be taken by DoD in order to maintain system security and network integrity. DoD is in no way responsible for any loss or corruption of data. Although DoD keeps tight backups of all information, it's the individual's responsibility to maintain regular backups of his or her important data, files, e-mail, or any other digital media that may or may not be stored by DoD. DoD will not be held responsible for any malicious attacks, made by any member of DoD, and or against any member of DoD.

We will do every thing in our power to protect you, the member, from any of the above situations. These rules are put in place so we can protect both ourselves and our members in extreme situations. We apologize for the fascist appearance of our Terms of Service, and can assure you that we will take every measure possible to avoid this extreme.

Thank you,
Project DoD
