The hosting project is a member supported nonprofit collective intent
upon helping the public gain access to tools that are needed for the
dissemination of information. Project DoD is intent upon offering much
of the alienated public an alternative option to corporate hosting and
its shortfalls. While the Internet has allowed for a breakthrough
in the means for sharing and propagating information, the market-driven
hosting solution has proven that it's incapable of providing the
public reasonable access to such tools. As a result we find that one
of the only tools left with the capability of balancing democratic
participation in media has become inaccessible to the underprivileged
masses. That is, those of us incapable of affording corporate hosting
charges or defending our right to free-speech may find ourselves left
out of public discussion, action, and consciousness. Our hopes are that
we may remedy this problem through a more collectively run and managed
structure, which allows a community of users to pool resources and
organize access to the capabilities this digital medium offers.

at Project DoD.

Virtual hosting (at least that is what we call it) is the idea of
getting your name as a lower-level domain extension to dod.net
(i.e. http://yourname.dod.net/). This is for those of you who would
like to save money on yearly domain registrations. Basically
Project DoD's servers provide you a home for your website and access to
our services and assistance.

Project DoD opperates off of donations from users. The $60.00 hosting
price above is a suggested donation that we request of all users.
Project DoD is a community run and supported 501(c)(3) nonprofit
organization. This means that without your contribution Project DoD will
be unable to function in any capacity. That is, we have bandwidth,
hardware, and basic organizational expenses that must be covered. The
amount above is a community breakdown of the minimum each user should
contribute to pay those expenses. Please, if you feel you can donate
more, do so. Your additional contribution may benefit others who are
unable to make a contribution of their own; and that is the real purpose
of collective organization.

Many Internet Service Providers make their money off bandwidth charges:
Project DoD is different. Since we are nonprofit and everyone who
hosts with dod.net is a collective member, we all share from the same
bandwidth pool. Each member of DoD.net is allocated 25 Gigs
of data
transfer a month; however, you will not be charged extra if you go
over. We believe any issues regarding excess bandwidth consumption
can be discussed and corrected. That is, if your site takes 10Gigs of
data transfer a month we will simply look at ways to reduce bandwidth
consumption, distribute bandwidth load to other DoD hosting servers,
or set up site mirrors. Many of the members of DoD hosting, however,
never come close to using their full 25 Gigs. This means that
if we
have done all we can to reduce your bandwidth consumption there is a
good chance you can continue to host with DoD and just mop-up the
bandwidth surplus. This is, After all, a collective community built
to share such resources.

You can get additional web-space in units of 500 megs. So for one
additional unit of 500 megs you would donate an additional $10.00 a
year. The additional space would be added to your current web-space,
which would bring your total to 1000 megs. The cost of the additional
space will simply be tacked onto your annual membership fee. For example
if you want 2000 more megs you would pay $40.00 more for the year. This
would bring your total web space to 2500 megs and your annual membership
fee to $100.00.
